Weems set out to distinguish herself by focusing on a specific niche: statues of animals. This was a time when women were often barred from art schools and considered to lack the strength and stamina to sculpt works of any size. The statue was sculpted by Katherine Ward Lane Weems, a Boston native who began her artistic career in the first half of the twentieth century. They might wonder how a rhino came to be here in this city of frigid winters. The beast is so massive and so imposing that it’s hard to miss. Pedestrians along the Fenway are sometimes surprised to discover a life-sized rhinoceros standing outside the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.
What? Who knew that there was even one? Well, two of them are technically in Cambridge but the “crash” of rhinos is all connected.
